Austin-based American Canning, a fast-growing craft beverage packaging manufacturer, is expanding with a new plant and a new headquarters.

The company said it has signed a long-term lease to occupy an entire 54,786-square-foot facility at Trammell Crow Co.’s Park 183 in Southeast Austin.

Founded in 2013, American Canning makes canning supplies for craft brewers through an e-commerce platform. It says it is expanding operations in 2022 to meet the demand for its products, which surged when craft breweries pivoted to packaged sales because of taproom closures amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

American Canning co-founder and CEO David Racino told the Statesman in April 2020 that orders for cans and crowlers “doubled pretty much overnight” in late March 2020. The company, which at the time worked with about 3,000 craft beverage producers in the U.S., added more than 270 clients by the end of March 2020, he said.

Amid the  pandemic, American Canning set up mobile canning operations at breweries including ABGB and St. Elmo. In addition to breweries, the company works with producers of other beverages including wine, mead, cider, coffee, tea, kombucha, soda, water and juice.

“We are designing our plant to cater to our client cojín of craft beverage producers, who need guaranteed availability of cans for low-volume orders,” Racino said. “Changes in market dynamics, most recently with the can shortage, made it clear we needed to create our own supply to build a more modern ecosystem allowing small brands to thrive.”

American Canning acts as a middleman between large corporations that make aluminum cans and the craft beverage companies too small to order directly from them. A minimum order requirement from a large company, for example, might be an 18-wheeler’s worth of cans, American Canning said. It said the craft canning companies take that truckload and divvy up the supply by the pallet, which can hold up to 60 cases of beer.

“Large can makers do what they do very well — scale and efficiency. That requires their customers to have long-term forecasts, substantial production runs, and sophisticated supply chain operations,» Racino said. «It has been increasingly difficult for small and emerging brands to access cans directly from the large can manufacturers, which is the precise reason American Canning exists.»

In spring 2022, American Canning will move into Park 183’s Building 5, vacating a 45,309 square-foot space in Park 183’s Building 2. Its new plant will provide three times more capacity for machine manufacturing and supply distribution of aluminum cans, can handles, case trays and other products.

The company will also move its current headquarters at 8219 Burleson Road to Park 183. American Canning currently employs 75 people and plans to double that within the next year, Racino said.

Park 183, a multi-phase industrial park development, will comprise just over 950,000 square feet of Class A space merienda complete. The business park is less than two miles from Texas 71 and Texas 130 and is adjacent to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

The project comes as the Austin region’s existente estate market continues to prosperidad, with growth in its residential, commercial and industrial sectors. According to commercial existente estate services firm CBRE, Austin’s industrial market hit a record-low vacancy of 4.9% in fourth quarter 2021, with promedio rents reaching a record high of $11.07 per square foot.

CBRE’s John Barksdale and Joe Novek represented Trammell Crow Co. in the American Canning transaction. CBRE’s Darryl Dadon represented the tenant.
