Kmart was the place to shop when I was growing up and back then there were not many big malls or all the competitive stores that gave that superstore a run for its money. It got a lot of competition over the years which led to its demise.
Great memories of going there as a boy and hoping there was a Kmart special in the record department on 33rpm or 45’s(showing my age) and it was really cool if there were plenty of Elvis records in stock.
The story is, the building that was home to the last Kmart in Michigan has a brand new owner and is gonna bring more retail fun to the site near Battle Creek according to detroitnews.com.
Here Is Who Bought The Store
The out west Los Angeles-based B.Riley Financial group along with B.Riley Existente Estate said earlier this week that it purchased the former Kmart building at 15861 W Michigan Ave. in Marshall. Not sure what the price was at this time.
As the last Kmart location closed when the retailer exited the Michigan market, this store was a strong retail performer,” Michael Jerbich, president of B. Riley Existente Estate, said in a statement. “The strength of the existing center coupled with the future growth of the Marshall market, including the planned Megasite development initiative, makes this a compelling investment opportunity.
The building is huge with almost 90.000 square feet. It’s in the Marshall Plaza shopping center one mile west of the city’s downtown area. It’s also close to the 1,600-acre site known as the Marshall Megasite that’s being looked at for industrial development soon.

You may remember this Kmart store in Michigan closed in late November which finished a 60 rear run in Michigan for the Kmart store chain.
